Book Consignment Rules at UVic's SUBtext Bookstore

Prices are set by students who receive 75% of the selling price when their book is purchased. This means that our books are usually cheaper than those at the main bookstore, and buying your books/supplies at SUBtext helps out a fellow student!

If you already have items on consignment with us, please remember that we cannot contact you regarding the status of your account, but you can email us at subtext@uvss.ca.

BOOKS

SUBtext does not accept the following books for 5 main reasons:

The textbook edition is far outdated for the courses being taught.
The new version of the textbook comes with a digital access code that is crucial to the course.
Course packs that are specific to individual classes frequently get updated / switch readings.
The book is available for free online.
The book was published ten or more years ago.

Other books can be refused for any other reason at the discretion of SUBtext supervisors and management.

The books on this list are common books we do not take. There may be others not on this list that we unfortunately cannot take.

Terms of Consignment

You sign a contract when you consign your books, so be sure to read over and understand the terms and conditions of this contract listed below.

SUBText Terms of Consignment

Consignment contact between SUBtext and consignor

75% of the selling price of each item shall be paid to the consignor. SUBtext retains a 25% fee for operating costs.
SUBtext is not responsible for loss, theft, or damage of any items placed on consignment.
SUBtext reserves the right to refuse and consignment for reasons including, but not limited to: condition, age, and edition.
All items are accepted at the discretion of the SUBtext staff and are sold on a consignment basis. The consignor sets the price for each item.
The consignment term ends at the close of business one year from the initial date of consignment. All items that remain unsold at the end of the consignment period become the sole property of SUBtext and all record of these items is purged from the consignment system at this time.
Payments to the consignor for items sold before the end of the consignment term will be held until close of business day for a grace period of six months following the end of the consignment term. On completion of the six month grace period any monies owed to the consignor for sold items will be forfeit and become the sole property of SUBtext.
It is the consignor’s responsibility to check with SUBtext periodically to find out if consignment items have sold. Payouts for consignment items occur by cheque throughout the year on a weekly basis. Cheques are issued on Fridays, with cutoff for cheque requests occurring on the preceding Wednesday. Photo ID must be presented at the time of cheque pick-up. The consignor may authorize a third party to pick up cheques on their behalf. Photo ID will be required.
Immediate cash payouts for consigned items are available at any time during store hours. Cash payouts require photo identification, are limited to payouts $15 and under, and are only available to the original consignor.
If you (the consignor) will not be in Victoria during your consignment term, provide us a self-addressed stamped envelope (SASE), along with a note stating your name and student number requesting that we send payment for items sold. We are unable to send payment for items sold without a SASE. If you require books to be re-consigned or withdrawn, you must come into the store during your consignment period and prior to leaving town, as no extensions will be offered.
